Remand prisoners are awaiting trial and haven’t been convicted. Most people who have been charged with a crime and are awaiting trial will be remanded on bail conditions that allow them to remain at home. Sometimes, however, bail is refused – this may be because the crime the individual has been accused of committing is particularly serious, the person has previous convictions for similar crimes or there is a strong risk that they may commit more offences or disappear before their trial.
