Beta Benefits Calculator Accessibility Statement

Find out how to get support using the Beta version of the Benefits Calculator. You can also find a list of the accessibility issues on the Calculator and the actions we are taking to address these.

This website is run by Elizabeth Finn Care, operating as Turn2us. We want as many people as possible to be able to use this website. For example, that means you should be able to:

  • navigate the website using just a keyboard.
  • navigate the website using speech recognition software.
  • listen to most of the website using a screen reader (including the most recent versions of JAWS, NVDA and Voiceover).
  • zoom in up to 400% without the text spilling off the screen.

We’ve also made the website text as simple as possible to understand.

AbilityNet has advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this website are not fully accessible:

  • On the ‘Before we begin’ and ‘What you are entitled to’ pages, there is text that should be made into headings and existing heading text that is not displayed in an order that screen readers can read. In addition, there is text in the ‘What you are entitled to’ page that the screen readers cannot read.
  • On the ‘Before we begin’, ’About you’, ‘Your Contributory Benefits’ pages, screen readers are able to read redundant paragraphs.
  • On all pages, keyboard navigation may be difficult for some people because the focus indicator is difficult to see because there is not sufficient colour contrast on some links and buttons.
  • On the ‘What you are entitled to’ page, there are duplicate labelled buttons that are read by screen readers.
  • On the ‘Your contributory benefits’ and the ‘What you are entitled to’ pages, people using keyboard navigation may have difficulty in seeing the ‘Weekly’, ’Monthly’ and ‘Yearly’ radio button text as there is insufficient colour contrast.
  • When the header menu is expanded or collapsed on all pages, whilst in mobile layout, screen readers do not read whether the header menu is either expanded or collapsed.
  • On the ‘Before we begin’, ’About you’ and ‘Your Contributory Benefits’ pages, screen magnifier users cannot determine the percentage completion shown by the progress bar because only part of it is visible at any time.
  • On the ‘What you are entitled to’ page, screen readers can read duplicated text because of the text alternative used for an image.
  • On all pages, people using a screen magnifier or keyboard navigation may have difficulty in seeing which items they have navigated to and the area of the page they are on.
  • If the ‘Your contributory benefits’ page is submitted with data validation errors, the page scrolls to the top and an error summary is displayed, but the focus remains on the Next button at the bottom of the page. People using a screen magnifier or keyboard navigation need to navigate backwards up the page to fix the errors, which is not intuitive.
  • On the ‘Your contributory benefits’ page, people using Dragon Naturally Speaking cannot select certain radio buttons.

We aim to fix most of these issues by the end of February 2021. Some of the issues with colour contrast are due to our brand. We are currently reviewing our brand and will make it more accessible in the second half of 2021.
